What is a security detector?
Security detectors are, simply, elements observed in every aspect of daily life, making it easier and more secure. Security detectors can scan both persons, as well as their pockets, bags and luggage. It can spot any potentially hazardous metal objects in the nick of time, and allowing the security to block the suspicious person's entry into the secure area.
We see security detectors usually at the gates of shopping malls, airports, bus terminals, government agencies, hotels, all public locations where security is a priority, concert and show halls, conference halls and other places where crowds are a usual sight.
The most wide-spread and effective detectors in this category are those shortly called "SWEEPER DETECTORS", capable of spotting metal objects (knives, guns, metal bars, pipes, other piercing and injurious materials) which may be located on persons, through a quick scan. These detectors are also used for checking the closed containers such as bags and pockets.
A second category contains the so-called "WALKTHROUGH DETECTORS", which spot metal objects on persons walking through a gate-like detector.
Both types of security detectors serve the same purpose, that is maximizing the security in the environment.
These are complemented by "X-RAY" machines found usually in locations which require maximum security, such as airports, border gates, important agencies, and large shopping malls. These detectors stand out with the special reflectors located below the scanning area. This helps them provide visual clues about the type and characteristics of the objects, by providing a color image of the objects located inside a container or package (i.e. bags, luggage), displayed on a computer monitor.
This helps only with a limited range though, since the reflectors are a must for this method of scanning to work. Therefore, this capability is not present in other detectors, which lack reflectors placed suitably, making these devices the exception rather than norm, offering services only in security checkpoints, under specific conditions. Such security systems are preferred for busy entrances, where individual checks on packages, bags or luggage would be time consuming.
Another matter to be taken into account is the potential of vehicles to carry, willfully or otherwise, hazardous materials. These issues are controlled with the help of "UNDERBODY SCANNING" systems. Sometimes this is done with the use of a simple mirror arrangement. At others, professional systems making use of cameras and recording devices are used to determine explosives and criminal materials. Another use underbody scanning systems are put to is to spot LPG consuming vehicles in indoors parking lot entrances.
